De Creatieve Fabriek
Factory for electric motors turned into vibrant, multifunctional centre
For decades the terrains of the old Hazemeyer Factory were buzzing with resilience, sounds, movement and activity. It was right in the industrial heart of the city of Hengelo. The old factory buildings are now the homes of De Creatieve Fabriek (The Creative Factory). De Creatieve Fabriek has become a success and a household name in the eastern part of The Netherlands. It is a showcase of revitalization of our industrial heritage and it attracts national and international attention.
Between 2005 and 2008 Gerben van Straaten of Walas Concepts designed the overall concept, studied the feasibility, worked at the necessary process and managed the redevelopment and the realization of the Hazemeyer area, in close cooperation with the City of Hengelo. Together with the developer, the city of Hengelo and several organizations Walas has implemented a concept that has gained broad support in the Hengelo community. The location is central, intimately embraced by two railway tracks, which contributes to the unique character of the site.
The interesting old-style buildings have been modestly transformed into inspiring workplaces for companies and artists. The character and special charm of the buildings were preserved. The blending of creative start-ups and small businesses in conjunction with professionals from the mainstream (creative) industry, ensures a sustainable creative economy. Besides the regular users and an incubator of ever-changing creative people, work is being done on an interesting annual programming with events such as art and cultural exhibitions, fairs, entertainment, media activities and festivals. This former plant will more and more become a vibrant centre - lively, mixed use of housing, work, art, culture, design and business.
Walas’ work was done early 2009. The operational phase and further developments are now continued by Hazemeyer BV an auxiliary of the renowned BOEi organization. At the same time the unique concepts of the early hour like Aksept social rehabilitation, Akkuh modern art and others have expanded their success.
